Competition for the extension of Diakonenhaus, Greifensee
Consultancy : Patricia Nydegger and Ecoreal
The concept of the “Zäme” project builds on continuity and upgrading. The Diakonenhaus grows and transforms into open and flexible spaces, which expand and supplement the existing offering. Spaces are linked by creating a flow that gently softens boundaries. The program is re-distributed in the existing structure and gains clarity and generosity through the functional separation.
Existing elements are taken over, expanded and connected with the new. In the main building, life and work are re-distributed on 3 levels: court, village, and residential level. The existing system of the residential pavilion is included as a module and complemented by the construction of a second wooden pavilion.
The resulting inner courtyard between the two living modules welcomes the inhabitants of the Diakonenhaus and opens up the units to a whole. The present façade is covered with a new wooden layer. The wooden layer defines the new exterior room as an extension of the interior room. A connection of the private living area and the social area of life emerges.
The overall construct follows a hierarchical arrangement from public through semi-public sphere to private areas. Great potential lies in the modular intensification of the buildings and structure.
The subject of the threshold continues through the project. Thresholds to the private, thresholds to the semi-public, thresholds to the public are redesigned to protect and accompany the inhabitants of the Diakonenhaus.
